Ready to begin homeschooling?

Take your first steps today!

First, I’m going to share with you what I found to be the most helpful resource for getting started with homeschooling. When we were thinking about homeschooling, I read everything I could find. Some were helpful, some were repetitive and a few were just a bit off the wall.

Your First Step to Homeschooling

You need to know the homeschooling laws in your state!

First and absolutely essential is Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA). HSLDA will explain your state homeschool requirements in a way you can understand.

  • Each state has different requirements, you need to know yours.
  • This is where you’ll find how to withdraw your child from public school.
  • How to give a notice of intent to homeschool, if required by your state.
  • HSLDA will help members with legal advice and representation if needed.
  • If you are homeschooling high school students, HSLDA also has information about credits and graduation.

Please, please, please…start with your states laws. Everything else builds upon these. Don’t go by what you’ve read somewhere or heard from a friend. It is essential for you to know what is required by your state!

Thinking About Homeschooling

Your Second Step to Homeschooling

You need to think about your daily life and if homeschooling will be a good fit for your family.

Here are a few questions to get you started.

  • Why are you thinking about homeschooling?
  • What are your goals and dreams for your children?
  • What do you want your homeschool day to be like?
  • Do you know any homeschoolers? Talk to them. Find out what challenges they face as homeschoolers. Chat with us at our new facebook page.
  • Is there a homeschool co-op in your area? This is a great resource for you to meet homeschool families. We’ve found some good friends at our co-op! They keep me going when the days are rough.
  • What do you do if the teacher is sick? (That will be you!)
  • How to Homeschool during challenging times?
  • Curriculum (my favorite topic) is a fancy word for the plan & materials you will use to teach your children. There are many options available. We recently reviewed CTCMath with our first and third graders. You many also enjoy these options for science and reading.
  • Do you have support for homeschooling? Is your spouse and family on board?

What's my next step?

Decide what is best for your family.

  • If homeschooling is a good fit for you, take the next step and begin planning your homeschool.
  • If homeschooling isn’t a good fit for you, that is ok. We are blessed to have many choices and educational opportunities for our families.
  • If you are still undecided, I encourage you to ask questions from homeschool families. Be sure to talk to some new and some experienced homeschoolers. That should give you a balanced perspective.
  • Take a look at some of the benefits of homeschooling.

If you read all the way to the end, you’re my kind of person! Leave a comment and tell me what’s on your mind about homeschooling. I’d love to know more about you and answer your questions.
